Green Claims Directive
A proposed EU directive, published by the European Commission in March 2023, that would have required companies to substantiate explicit environmental claims with a defined methodology and have them checked by an independent verifier before publication.
In June 2025 the Commission announced its intention to withdraw the proposal and the final negotiation round was cancelled. It has not been adopted and places no obligations on companies.
EcoAppraise context
Do not describe the Green Claims Directive as law in force. Current EU obligations on environmental claims come from the EmpCo Directive and the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, which already require claims to be accurate and substantiated.
